Who should attend?

Employees or Contractors who have responsibility for managing and overseeing geotechnical aspects within an extractives and mineral processing environment, in line with those set out in the Quarries Regulations 1999 and ACOP.

Delegates MUST provide evidence of holding the (intermediate) Level 3 Qualification, prior to attending.

Aims

To provide course members with:

This Advanced knowledge course will benefit individuals who are involved in and responsible for carrying out geotechnical inspections in the workplace and give a greater understanding of the requirements during appraisals and when assessments will be required.

The information and skills to manage geotechnical aspects of their work in quarries effectively;
To take an active role in quarry design;
The maintenance of a safe geotechnical environment throughout the life of a quarry

Content

The course includes:

  • Hazards and definitions
  • More advanced knowledge on causes of instability in soil and rock slopes
  • Rockfall, Rockfall design and control measures
  • Rockfall and control measures
  • Geotechnical assessment including practical aspects using latest technologies.
  • Inspections and record keeping
  • Working practices
  • Legal compliance

Duration and Delivery Options

Day 1: Based in a training room.
Short lectures;
Demonstrations;
Group discussions;
Case studies;
Practical instruction

Day 2:
Based in training room and includes dynamic practical application of inspections/appraisals
The legal and principles of appraisal, assessment and inspections and records
Interactive visual sessions and scenarios to practice, inspections/appraisals in the classroom environment.
Multiple choice assessment of 24 questions.

Bespoke Course (full courses only)
This course can be bespoke designed to fit your requirements; Should you wish to have an onsite inspection you will need access to a quarry and full PPE wear will be required.

Successful completion of the course leads to a Level 4 Award in Geotechnical Knowledge for Quarrying Management (VQ)
