Who should attend?

For people who: Are responsible for blasting operations at a site; But who are not appointed explosives supervisors under the Quarries Regulations 1999, Regulation 25 (1) (b)

Aims

To provide course members with: Sufficient knowledge and practical understanding of blasting operations; The ability to be able to manage a blasting operation at a quarry; Sufficient knowledge to successfully complete the knowledge assessment criteria for the MPQC Level 6 Award in Managing Quarry Drilling and Blasting Qualification (QCF)

Content

The course includes:

  • The chemistry of explosives, designing a blast from first principles and blast calculations
  • Control of flyrock and borehole geometry
  • Charging blastholes
  • Profiling: interpretation and use
  • Explosives: constituents and physical characteristics, types of explosives, bulk truck operations and disposal of explosives
  • Initiation systems and initiation patterns
  • Causes of misfires, recognition of misfires and misfire investigation
  • Checking and approving blast specifications

Number of delegates

minimum 6, maximum 8.

Duration and Delivery Options

Day 1 – day 2: Based in a training room. Short lectures; Demonstrations; Group discussions; Case studies; Practical instruction. Day 3: A practical exercise covering checking of initiation circuits. Successful completion of the course leads to a MPQC Certificate of Achievement
