Collaborating with Breedon Group for new recruits

Leading construction materials group Breedon are working with MP Skills to recruit 17 new Trainee Quarry or Plant Operatives into their business.

Breedon’s commitment to ‘making a material difference’ will use MP Skills’ level 2 Mobile and Static Plant Operator Apprenticeship scheme to support on the job experience.

“Bringing new blood into the sector is essential to us. Our apprenticeships nurture the talents of people opting to earn whilst learning. Developing new skills and awareness of the quarry environment is best achieved by using blended learning, both on and off the job and that’s why the level two apprenticeship in conjunction with MP Skills is important to us,” said Stewart Hook,

During your programme you will learn the critical knowledge skills and behaviours to operate mobile and static plant equipment effectively and safely.

This is a structured apprenticeship and training programme, complete with blended learning, e-learning, and face to face training.

The Learners Programme

Apprentices’ responsibilities will include carrying out preventative and routine maintenance inspections of equipment and housekeeping, and the operation of mobile and fixed plant. Typically reporting to the Quarry Manager, the role will be practical and hands-on from day one. Throughout the apprenticeship you will be provided with excellent training to help you become a competent quarry operative by the end of the programme.

Training will be a mixture of on and off the job activities, with occasional travel to the apprenticeship centre in Nottingham for group workshops. The training will specifically focus on learning to operate the plant machinery and mobile plant vehicles such as loading shovels and dump trucks.

Earn While You Learn

Annual wage or hourly wage

23 and over £9.50 p/hour, 21 to 22 £9.18 p/hour, 18 to 20 £6.83 p/hour

Working week (Mon- Fri)

With occasional Saturday mornings

Total hours per week

40 hours under 18, 48 hours 18 and over

End Qualifications

Successful completion of the course will afford the MPQC Level 2 Diploma in Mineral Products Mobile Plant Operations and/or the Level 2 Diploma in Mineral Products Processing Operations, as well as an industry recognised ‘Blue Card’ for a specific piece of plant machinery.

Personal Attributes

Good communication skills (written and verbal).

Timekeeping and punctuality, ability to work as a team, enthusiastic and willing to learn and develop.
